I went to see Macbeth at Studio Liverpool.
I have always struggled with Shakespeare. I never understand it. Frustrated in 2008 I swore I would never go to see a Shakespeare play again. I changed my mind for Studio Liverpool’s new production.
Trickster Theatre presented us with a contemporary revolutionary setting for Macbeth. The audience were close to the action with an intimate layout of two rows of chairs around an oval performance space. The actors kept us alert by dramatically approaching the stage from four dark and misty recesses of the room into the atmospherically lit space. They did not shy away from the violence either, there was a lot of guns, sticks, blood and a disturbingly staged infanticide.
It would be dishonest for me to claim I understood it all. But I did enjoy it a lot, and I understood far more than usual! Splendid!
