George and I went to see Tell Tale Theatre in their production of 1984. We both love the book so had been looking forward to this.
We were incredibly impressed. They really captured the depth of the book. And they had props for everything…including the kitchen sink!
The paranoia was felt powerfully in the first act. I was particularly impressed with doublethinking Parsons who played the part is if he was saying one thing and thinking two contradictory things.
A brief interval, Worstenholme Square, in which I counted at least six CCTV cameras watching me and wondered if the trees had microphones in them. Reassuring myself that “If I have nothing to hide I have nothing to fear” we re-entered the Kazimier.
The second act was filled with fear, betrayal and the end of hope. The Ministry of Love scenes were terrifying and deeply disturbing. Exactly as they should be.
It was a long play. I can’t think of any significant parts of the book that were missed out. But we enjoyed it so much, very thought provoking and engaging. We hadn’t realised so much time had passed.
Dark and chilling… Double Plus Good!
